Editorial Review for Maison Akira – by Kim Cooper

The Scene
Located near the Pasadena Playhouse, sophisticated locals and clued-in international visitors are meant to feel continents away amid the dining room's gilded walls, lush red drapery, flickering candles and contemporary Impressionist artwork. Linen-covered tables are thoughtfully spaced, allowing decor-seduced diners some measure of intimacy.

The Food
A fixture in L.A.'s fine-dining community, Chef Akira Hirose (L'Orangerie, Citrus) has crafted a menu as luxurious as the eatery's striking design. Notable starters include chilled and caviar-dotted lobster claws; peppery duck pâté, luscious tuna tartare paired with tart fruit relish, and traditional hearty French onion soup. The juicy, peppered-and-grilled rib eye is served in a sharp wine reduction. But Hirose's master-chef reputation was sealed with the creation of his delicate, flavorful signature entree, miso-soaked Chilean sea bass. A dessert highlight is the architecturally stunning Timbal Elysee Laserre, featuring rich vanilla-bean ice cream framed in a lacy caramel dome.

The dinning area is beautiful, great for romantic dining. Service is good, well please note half of the tables are empty. Menu is very expensive, and personally I don't think it's worth the price. Now the food: Appetizer: C+, very small portion, taste average. Lobster Bisque: F, taste like Campbell's soup plus Pepto-Bismol, seriously it taste like medicine. Lamb Chop: A+, cook just right, taste great. So, for the price I think it's overpriced.
