Editorial Review for Yang Chow – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
This beloved institution has introduced more than one neophyte diner to the joys of Chinese cuisine. Familiar favorites like moo shu pork and Szechuan beef lead the large menu, but house specialities like the famed slippery shrimp--a neon batch of sugar-coated butterflied shrimp--should not be overlooked. Other popular dishes include sauteed string beans and hot Szechuan wonton soup with bite-sized dumplings. Kung pao chicken offers diced chicken dotted with peanuts and chopped onions.

Insider Tips

Parking

The restaurant has a small, cheap lot behind it. If that's full, keep in mind that Chinatown parking is unpredictable, so pack some loose change or dollar bills and park in any space that crops up: metered street or adjacent lots.

When to Go

The busiest hours tend to be from noon to 1:30pm and from 6pm to 8pm; try dining during off-peak times for a more relaxed meal.

The Extras

In another area? Yang Chow has locations in Chinatown, Pasadena and the San Fernando Valley.

I've been to Yang Chow about 7 times now and I always get the slippery shrimp. I've had bites of other peoples food, and I never really like it (hence the 4 stars, not 5) but the shrimp is so good, that it's worth it just for that dish! I hate to be cliche (everyone loves it) but it really is the best.

Pros: Slippery Shrimp!

Cons: Ambience is kinda dull, as are some of the other dishes. DEF make a reservation!

Canned mushrooms in the wonton soup! YUCK. Cups had bleach smelling residue. Noodles were flooded in sauce, cooks were yelling in the kitching the whole time.
