Editorial Review for Los Angeles County Museum of Art – by Kim Cooper
The Scene
One of the most popular museums in the city, LACMA builds its audience with evening jazz concerts and a strong film series, including bargain matinees. No visit is complete without a wander through the park, where sculptures by Rodin and Calder vie for attention with a heartbreaking tableau of a doomed mammoth family in the tar pit at the neighboring Page Museum.
The Collection
LACMA's holdings could fill a dozen specialty museums. A labyrinth of galleries showcase strengths of the permanent collection, such as Japanese art, German expressionism, pre-Columbian art and costumes. Touring exhibitions are often surprisingly edgy; it was LACMA, not MOCA, that hosted the Whitney's Mike Kelley retrospective. Other major traveling shows have included a history of the Egyptian pyramids and a high-profile Van Gogh retrospective.

I can't remember the last time I paid more than $8 for a museum--and this was the LACMA student price. I went to see King Tut with 10 other friends. The exhibit was built upfirst, some general Egyptian history, then the life of the pharaohs, then King Tut, some Tut artifacts, a video speculating his death, then...the gift shop? I walked in and out 5 times and had to ask the guard--where is King Tut?! He said I was the 100th person to ask that; Tut was in Egypt. What a tease--not one mummy. I wouldn't have minded so much except that's what we were expecting.
Pros: variety of programs and exhibits and films all the time
Cons: King Tut exhibit, museum could use a little lifting up--more college nights

A highlight of LA, goes hand in hand on the tour for artists, collectors and art passionatas. Always progressive, well-curated and beautifully designed. I enjoy almost as much as NYC art museums. Very very close.
Cons: parking
