Editorial Review for Mr. Chow – by Jennifer Schwartz
The Scene
Hot spots cool fast, but Mr. Chow has held the eternal flame of see-and-be-seen dining since 1973. The decor is stark and modern, and the vibe is clubby and buzzing with energy. Chic diners squeeze into tightly packed tables along a center banquette, while larger parties and A-list celebs gather round more spacious tables along the wall. Servers are professional and lightning-fast, whisking away plates as soon as fork touches china.
The Food
The menu offers fancy and pricey versions of Chinese cuisine classics. Solid starters include won ton soup with a clear, robust broth, and steamed dumplings enhanced by a piquant chili sauce. Top entree options are house specialties like green prawns marinated in a spinach dressing and sauteed with crisp red peppers and crunchy cashews, and grilled filet mignon sided by crisp baby asparagus. Other winners are crunchy snow pea sprouts and fluffy fried rice spiked with plump shrimp.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoThe best nights for star sightings are Wednesdays and Thursdays. You'll know the caliber of celebs inside by the number of paparazzi lining the sidewalk.
The ExtrasParties larger than 12 can reserve the private room upstairs. A prix-fixe dinner costs about $60 per person, which can be a better deal than dining downstairs.

Ok it's expensive yes we get it, but it is well worth it. Just the decor alone is worth the visit, i mean Cy Twombly plates, Joseph Hoffman chairs, Andy Warhol screens, Jean-Michel Frank lights, awesome! I am not being a snob it's just give credit where credit is due! it's also a fun time capsule of early 80's nightlife. Plus, the food was delicious, the scallion pancakes, the prawns, some other fish in a red sauce that was unbelievable, come on! It was a great dinner in beautiful setting. Just don't order champagne....that'll getcha!
Pros: food, decor, service
Cons: pricey, but it's worth it

I would not pay so much for Chinese food, personally, but, I was on a date with a pretty successful and well known athlete who heard Mr. Chow's was great. He heard WRONG! The server took forever to bring us our drinks, apps took 20 minutes to arrive at our table & the food was cold when it arrived. Even worse than being late and cold, it needed more seasoning. We went elsewhere for dessert. I will never eat there again.
